IN FOCUS: Detroit Welcomes 11th APEC Transportation Ministerial Meeting
U.S. Secretary for Transportation Pete Buttigieg convened Transportation Ministers from APEC’s 21 member economies in Detroit, Michigan for discussions on the transportation sector’s role in supporting supply chain resilience, addressing climate change, and promoting economic inclusion. Executives from APEC 2023 Private Sector Host Committee members Boeing, Citi, FedEx, GM, J&J, Uber, and UPS joined the high-level discussions to highlight ways the private sector is contributing to these efforts.
“Pandemic-driven supply disruptions, increasingly frequent extreme weather events, and economic inequality, these challenges don’t just affect one economy while sparing the others, they affect us all,” said Secretary Buttigieg. “These challenges are often shared opportunities that grow even more promising through dialogue and exchange.”
In the Chair’s statement, the group recognized the transportation sector’s role in addressing climate change as one of the largest sources of emissions. The group indicated that APEC remains committed to advancing sustainability in bold, new ways through innovation and technologies that drive economic growth. The meetings also emphasized the need to catalyze the transition towards low and zero emissions cars, such as electric, plug-in hybrid and fuel cell vehicles, across the transportation sector.
Mike Duggan, Mayor of Detroit; Mary Barra, Chair and CEO of General Motors and APEC 2023 Private Sector Host Committee Co-chair; and Secretary Buttigieg also welcomed delegates to Detroit at a PSHC-sponsored reception on 15 May.
WHAT’S NEXT: Addressing Economic Revitalization, Transformation and Resilience
Ambassador Katherine Tai, United States Trade Representative, will welcome Trade Ministers from APEC member economies from 25-26 May in Detroit.
“Detroit represents the story of the United States’ economic revitalization, transformation and resilience,” said Matt Murray, who leads overall coordination of the U.S. hosting effort in his role as U.S. Senior Official for APEC. “Detroit showcases the importance of cross-border trade with our neighbor, worker-centric trade policies and an advanced manufacturing industry, making it a perfect location for highlighting economic inclusion and innovative growth.”
The Ministers will discuss advancing policies and cooperation on trade and investment that can contribute to sustainable and inclusive growth in the APEC region. They will also meet with Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), to discuss ways APEC can support the multilateral trading system.
On 25 May, the APEC 2023 Private Sector Host Committee will welcome APEC Trade Ministers to a luncheon focused on connecting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to the global economy. Ambassador Tai will address guests, and Monica Hardy Whaley, President of the National Center for APEC (NCAPEC), will introduce a panel discussion exploring ways SMEs have leveraged digitally-enabled services or technologies to access global markets.
Panelists will include:
- Hua Wang, Executive Director, Global Innovation Forum, National Foreign Trade Council
- Farai Gundan, M.B.A. M.P.A (Harvard), Co-Founder and CEO, Abantufy
- William Scott, President and CEO, Applied Mobility Devices, Dynamo and Scottie
- Ashley M. Williams, Founder and CEO, RIZZARR
The Transportation and Trade meetings and surrounding private sector events are the first in a series of high-level meetings taking place in the U.S. leading up to the APEC Leaders’ Meeting and the APEC CEO Summit USA 2023 in San Francisco this November. The U.S. Government will hold six Ministerial-level engagements in Seattle, Washington from 29 July-22 August.
