In June, U.S. private sector leaders and the National Center for APEC joined the APEC China CEO Forum in Beijing. The APEC China CEO Forum is an annual event designed to bring Chinese and global businesses together to discuss key business opportunities and challenges in the Asia-Pacific. With more than 350 representatives from across APEC economies, the Forum covered a range of topics including sustainability and the Bangkok Goals on the Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Economy, economic integration, supply chain resilience, and global growth.

Monica Hardy Whaley, President of the National Center for APEC spoke to attendees during a  special session to preview the APEC CEO Summit USA 2023 and invite Chinese businesses to attend and participate.

“After the extended period of pandemic challenges, economic disruptions and accelerating climate impacts that all of us are feeling, it seems APEC has really met its moment,” said Ms. Hardy Whaley. “There may not always be perfect alignment on all elements of all issues, but the priorities of APEC are broadly shared amongst members, and when that is the case, I believe true progress can be achieved.”

The meetings highlighted the value of U.S.-China corporate engagement, and set the stage for future collaboration among APEC economies and businesses.

In August, Seattle will host multiple events and meetings as a part of the third APEC Senior Officials Meetings (SOM).

Home to multiple APEC USA 2023 Private Sector Host Committee members, including Boeing, Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle is the ideal setting for APEC ministerial meetings incorporating the common theme: digital.

The U.S. government will highlight August as digital month for APEC, with conversations centering on digital inclusion, telehealth, cybersecurity, digital trade, among other topics. Discussions will dive into artificial intelligence and how to support AI at scale across the Asia-Pacific. Delegates will also have an opportunity to join a tour of Microsoft facilities and learn more about the latest developments. High-level engagements include:

  • Energy Ministers’ Meeting
  • High-level Meeting on Health and the Economy
  • Food Security Ministers’ Meeting
  • Senior Disaster Management Officials’ Forum
  • Small and Medium Enterprises Ministerial Meeting
  • Women and the Economy Forum

The Private Sector Host Committee will host gala receptions during the Health and Energy ministerial meetings, bringing together private sector leaders with senior government officials to network and engage. The Health ministerial will take advantage of Seattle’s vibrant health sector, with visits to local hospitals and academic institutions. At each of these locations APEC delegates will learn about the ways patients benefit from digital innovations.

Representatives from the Small and Medium Enterprises Working Group will discuss tech innovations and ecommerce, and visit the Port of Seattle.
