SUSTAINABILITY FOCUS: Creating Actionable Climate-Conscious Solutions and Resource Efficiency

In 2022, the 21 APEC member economies adopted the Bangkok Goals on the Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Economy, a robust framework to promote sustainable development objectives.

This year, the U.S. government has placed sustainability at the core of its APEC agenda. Under its Manoa Agenda, sustainability has been a primary focus of high-level events, including the 13th APEC Energy Ministerial Meeting in Seattle where U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm noted, “The bottom line is, there is no option but to work together. Our greatest challenges can be our best opportunities, and none of us is alone in this fight to save the planet.”

By facilitating a collective conversation between governments and businesses about how to create sustainable economic opportunity, the APEC CEO Summit 2023 will further bridge the gap between sustainability policy and implementation.

At the Summit, high-level dialogues and intimate discussions led by world leaders and executives from leading global companies will address key sustainability topics, including:

  • The Just Energy Transition
  • Alternative and Renewable Energy
  • Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation
  • Finance and Global Sustainability Efforts
  • Trade Policy and Sustainability

The APEC CEO Summit 2023 will address issues that affect all communities in the region, ranging from climate change and equitable growth, to global health, supply chains and the emergence of groundbreaking technologies. Preview the APEC CEO Summit 2023 program agenda here.

WHAT’S NEW: NCAPEC To Host Sustainable Future Forum in San Francisco on November 14

On November 14 – the day prior to the kickoff of the APEC CEO Summit 2023 – NCAPEC, in a demonstration of private sector support for the U.S. host year theme of Creating a Resilient and Sustainable Future for All, will host the inaugural Sustainable Future Forum (SFF).

SFF will connect the public and private sectors, creating a productive and collaborative space for sharing perspectives, technologies, practices, and policies necessary to advance the Bangkok Goals on the Bio-Circular-Green Economy. The SFF agenda will reflect the four pillars of the Bangkok Goals:

  • Supporting global efforts to comprehensively address all environmental challenges, including climate change, extreme weather and natural disasters, for a sustainable planet, particularly in terms of climate mitigation, adaptation and resilience
  • Progressing sustainable and inclusive trade and investment
  • Advancing resource efficiency and sustainable waste management
  • Promoting environmental conservation, sustainable use and management of natural resources, as well as halting and reversing biodiversity loss

The SFF program will feature a diverse lineup of public and private sector leaders and host an innovation pitch competition, featuring six STEM entrepreneurs participating in the U.S. State Department-supported Global Innovation through the Science and Technology (GIST) program.
